On May 7th, the Library millage failed, as well as the other ballot issues. We understand the voters concern on how their tax money is spent. The Library did not make the decision to request an extra .4 mill lightly. In 2019 the Library received $109,694 in Penal Fines and for this current fiscal year we received $55,129 in Penal Fines. A fifty percent reduction in penal fines and a 20% overall reduction of our budget this past fiscal year. By the State Constitution Penal Fines are given to Public Libraries and the County Law Library. Penal Fines are the fines levied on violations of the State Penal Code. Taken with the rate of inflation over the past three years our income has been decreasing while expenses have been increasing. It is with a heavy heart that the Library Board has had to make some hard decisions. Starting July 1st the Library’s hours will be cut to four days a week. Currently the Library is open 41 hours per week. After July 1st the Library hours will be: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9-5, making the library open 32 hours per week. The Library will be closed on Wednesday and Saturday. We may have to lay-off a staff member(s.) Programming may be cut or severely reduced. In August, the Library will try once again to pass an increase in the millage. If it should pass, the programs and hours can be restored. It is hoped that we will not need to make any more cuts and restore all previous cuts.
